Color and pattern can be achieved on ceramics without glazes. A saggar is a clay box that is used to fire combustible materials in close proximity to your burnished clay pieces. Vaporized minerals leave a lasting impression on the finished surfaces of your work. Join this class to learn how to assemble a temporary gas kiln, build saggars and playfully experiment with the effects of seaweed, sawdust, copper, and much more on your creations. Saggar fired pots have a distinct decorative quality and should not considered for food or water.

Using a bright orange terra cotta clay body, you will create all kinds of forms which will serve as a canvas for highly decorative painting reminiscent of traditions from the Italian Renaissance, earlier Islamic world, and the whimsey of "art for art's sake" of the 21st century. We will trace the history of 'majolica' as we pull out the paint brushes and explore the exciting possibilities of rich and vibrant color on pieces of pottery. A simple mug form will become something fantastic as you use your imagination with this highly ornate surface treatment. . The forms maybe traditional or modern, handbuilt or wheel thrown. All skills levels in working with clay are welcome. |

We all use ceramic objects in our day-to-day lives, but have you ever stopped and thought about the cup you are drinking from or the tiles in your bathroom? These are places where ideas could begin to enter our lives quietly. Whether it is through the accessibility of a cup or the seemingly benign surface of a bowl. Ceramics could be your new canvas. This course is an opportunity for students with interest in painting, drawing or printmaking to apply their skills on paper and canvas to the surface of ceramics. You will use your backgrounds as a launching pad for discovering the potential of clay to come away from this course with basic handbuilding, mold making and surface decoration skills. This class is a wonderful opportunity to hone decorating your ceramics or to learn the potential of clay. This course is open to all skill levels. First time students receive a basic tool kit.

She will discuss her working style designed to achieve her goal of preserving the soft, fluid feeling of the wet clay throughout the finished piece, ultimately creating pots that are comfortable, energetic, and joyful. The days will be interspersed with demonstration, time for student experimentation, and informal discussion of topics of group interest. Discussion topics may include: the potter’s lifestyle and work habits, the relevance of pottery in daily life, atmospheric effects of glaze and wood, as well as the ins-and-outs of making a living in clay in the 21st century. This workshop is especially well suited to those who would like to “loosen up” in the studio, and encourage self-expression or “voice” through clay. Some previous throwing experience is helpful.
