If you are concerned that monitor hours maybe canceled on a particular day, due to weater, please call 603-643 5384. If the are to be cancelled a message will be left on the machine.

Beginners through advanced clay students are welcome to sharpen their ceramic skills. You'll develop basic wheel throwing techniques, hone any skills already in place, figure out the best way to finish particular pieces, work with slips, try various types of surface embellishments—from simple sprigging to slip to layered carving—and explore the CraftStudies glaze palette.

In this class you’ll take clay from its raw state to finished mugs for enjoying your favorite beverage. Learn how to design and refine mugs to be pleasing and practical. There will be demonstrations and discussions on making the mug body, crafting handles, rims and feet as well as texture and design.A variety of slab building methods will be taught. Wheel instruction will be available for those with previous experience.Class will culminate with glazing, adding color to pieces that you have created throughout the course. Please bring a hand towel and notebook to class. Beginner through advanced clay students welcome.

This class is for those who have always wanted to learn how to work on a pottery wheel. This 4-week class is structured in a step-by-step way to help you enjoy and learn to be successful working on the pottery wheel. You’ll learn centering, hand and body position, creating form, trimming, and glazing. In addition to class, you are encouraged to make use of practice sessions offered during the week. Please bring pottery tools if you have them, a notebook and a hand towel.

Terra cotta is red earthenware often used to make planters, tile, and bricks. You’ll use it to hand-build or throw on the wheel forms both classical and modern. You’ll also use slabs and coils to construct items never before seen. These pieces will be unique and functional, if desired. Projects will include a planter, decorative box, vase and/or bowl and may be considered 'finished' with or without a glaze. The following class—Majolica Glazing Technique—offers a glaze that is perfect for using on terra cotta. Bring an apron and notebook. Beginner through advanced clay students welcome.

Drawing from historic and contemporary sources, explore the possibilities of majolica glaze technique. With terra cotta bisque as your canvas, you’ll decorate using bright colors on a white, tin-based majolica glaze. Finished pieces will be fun and unique—also functional. This class could be a follow-up from the Building with Terra Cotta class offered earlier. You’ll need to provide your own terra cotta pieces, or Karin may provide bisqued pieces to decorate. There may be an opportunity to make new work during this class and in monitor hours between classes. Bring your notebook and imagination. Beginner through advanced clay students welcome.

As a ceramics student with some experience working on the potter's wheel, you'll concentrate on forming, turning, pulling handles, and assembling unusual pieces. You'll also explore decorating techniques inspired by the rich history of English slipware, African sgraffito, and Japanese style brushwork.

In this class, you’ll create pottery with stoneware, white slip, brightly colored stains, and sgraffito to create rich, inviting surfaces. Using the wheel, you’ll throw and alter simple mugs, bowls, and plates. While instruction will be given in throwing and forming techniques, the goal of the class will be to create lively, colorful surfaces on pottery.

Spirals of colors appear when colored, layered clay is thrown on the wheel. You’ll go through the process of wedging stains into the clay, layering the different colors and throwing shapes on the wheel. You’ll then take it further by faceting, fluting and carving the surface to reveal patterns. This is a wonderfully organic process that integrates the patterned designs with the piece. The weekend will include a slide presentation of current colored clay work by a broad range of artists, as well as demonstrations and hands-on. The materials fee includes 25lbs of porcelain, stains, and firings.

Explore making a variety of musical instruments that have been made with clay for thousands of years.Shana will provide examples and demonstrate techniques used to create rattles, wind chimes, rain sticks, horns, flutes, ocarinas and xylophones.Using simple hand-building techniques, you’ll pinch, stretch and shape the clay into a variety forms and vessels used to create sounds.We will discuss the mechanics of instruments, what makes them work and how shape, size and thickness affect the pitch of each instrument.You may make several small instruments or choose to focus on one more complex piece. No previous experience necessary.

Learn to use brushes to decorate your ceramic work. Ara will guide you through the execution of various designs and brush strokes. Learn the secrets for turning clay into music. No prior clay experience is needed as we use a variety of hand-building techniques to create rain sticks, whistles, horns, and xylophone bars. Ethan will bring his finished instrumentsto play, and he will teach youhow to play them.The fun in this workshopnever ends because you’ll take home working musical instruments!
