Years ago I fell in love with porcelain before my throwing skills where up to the task. My way forward was making simple thrown forms and reworking them to add interest. I began to develop ways of texturing, faceting and wet altering these pots into the forms that I found compelling. Separating porcelain from its association with thinness and refinement was for me the beginning of a long relationship of fascination and discovery with this material. In this workshop I will share with you the possibilities of freshly thrown porcelain by making pots that depart from their original wheel thrown form.

Saturday & Sunday, 10:00am-4:00pm
March 20 & 21 (snow date Mar 27 & 28). 2 sessions, 12 hrs
POSTPONED UNTIL MAY 1st & 2nd
Tuition: $150 ($145*). Materials fee: $40 |

Spirals of colors appear when colored, layered clay is thrown on the wheel. You’ll go through the process of wedging stains into the clay, layering the different colors and throwing shapes on the wheel. You’ll then take it further by faceting, fluting and carving the surface to reveal patterns. This is a wonderfully organic process that integrates the patterned designs with the piece. The weekend will include a slide presentation of current colored clay work by a broad range of artists, as well as demonstrations and hands-on. The materials fee includes 25lbs of porcelain, stains, and firings.
