Clay classes for children and teens are listed on the children's page. Teens over the age of 15, may join adult classes with permission of the instructor.

In addition to our regular classes we are happy to offer one-on-one instruction and private classes for four or more friends. Birthday parties for adults and children in our metals (10 years and up) and mixed media studio.

Students currently enrolled in a class have access to the studio outside of class times. Click here to download the monitor hours for January through March 2012; they are listed in blue on the calendar; and are also posted in the studio. Monitor hours vary from session to session. If you are concerned that monitor hours maybe canceled on a particular day, due to weather, please call 603-643 5384. If the are to be cancelled a message will be left on the machine.

$25 discount off your tuition if you and a friend sign-up for a class (certain restrictions apply)

The tuition amount in brackets (marked with an asterisk) is the price the members of the League of NH Craftsmen pay, or if you PAY for a class/workshop three weeks before the start of the class/workshop. Full details are given on the registration form.

Clay costs $35/25 lbs, and includes glazes and firings. Only clay purchased at CraftStudies can be used in the studio.

Functional Pottery

In this class you will develop basic pottery making skills while learning a bit about the history of clay. You’ll work with the potter’s wheel to make pots from side dishes to serving pieces. You will also explore some of the decorative possibilities offered by slip, glazes and ceramic stains as you complete pieces for the home. Beginners are welcome.

Whether you are a beginner wanting to learn basic wheel techniques, or an advanced student looking to hone skills and develop new ways of working with form and surface, you are welcome to join this class. You’ll develop projects suited to your interests, work with slips, explore methods of surface embellishment, and experiment with the studio glaze palette. Bring a notebook, apron, and any clay tools you may have.

Introduction to Intermediate Pottery

An ideal class for beginners, and those who wish to tune up their pottery skills, or want to take their pottery skills to the next level. In a relaxed atmosphere you will have the opportunity to learn to make a variety of functional forms. The class will include handbuilding and instruction on the pottery wheel, taking the clay from its raw state through glazed finished ware. Step-by-step demonstrations as well as individualized instruction will be given. You will be given help designing and constructing your own projects.

Wake Up to Clay

Beginner and experienced students should bring a favorite piece of pottery to class the first day for inspiration. Using new ideas, and ancient handbuilding methods, we’ll inspire each other in creating objects never seen before—altering the round, cutting and piecing together, redirecting and reforming the clay. You’ll use combinations of working with slabs, pinching and coiling. The wheel will be available also. Surface treatment of the pots will be introduced and all pieces will be glaze-fired and ready for kitchen use if desired.

As a ceramics student with some experience working on the potter's wheel, you'll concentrate on form, turning, pulling handles, and assembling unusual pieces. You'll also explore decorating techniques inspired by the rich history of English slipware, African sgraffito, and Japanese style brushwork.

In this class you’ll learn traditional and contemporary Japanese handbuilding and wheel throwing at your level of experience—beginner through experienced potter. You’ll have fun experimenting with decoration techniques including carving, stamping, and glazing. You can relax and create your own original work. The class is taught in Japanese. Bring your own towel, apron or old clothes, and your own tools if you have them.

Pottery 101

Learn the basics of pottery. Whether you've tried it before, or have never been on the wheel and want to give it a go, sign up for this class. We'll go over all the steps and techniques of "throwing" to make pieces you'll be proud of. From centering the clay to shaping your pots, making and attaching handles, to decorating and glazing you will gain a great foundation of skills.
