Learn to crochet fabulous “rope” necklaces and bracelets. By the end of the second class you will leave with a completed necklace with a sterling clasp and the confidence to make more on your own. Please bring magnifying spectacles with you as this is very fine work, but lots of fun! The instructor will provide all materials required to make the necklace.

In two sessions you will learn the ancient art of knotting and stringing so that you can repair a favorite string of beads or create your own from scratch. You will learn about the different weights of string to use with different beads. The materials fee covers thread and beads for an initial project. Sandy will have additional materials for other projects or you can bring your own beads and supplies.

Add to the techniques learned in the first two sessions of bead stringing. In this class you will focus on multi-stone and multi-strings. Sandy will have materials for one project or you can bring your own beads and supplies.

Ed will take you through the process of designing and ordering Apple photo books using iPhoto 08. The first part of the class will cover color correcting and retouching your photos to make them look their best for the book. You will then design the book layout by choosing and customizing the base iPhoto book themes. To end, you will learn how to order your masterpiece through Apple online. Bring a computer with iPhoto 08 installed to class with you. The materials fee is based on the type of book you order.

Using Digital Cameras and Photoshop

You will spend the morning learning many aspects of digital cameras including: a simple explanation of how the camera works; image quality and formats; lenses, exposures, shutters; menus, settings, buttons, metering; composing, proper lighting, choosing the best image, observing details, storing and transferring images; camera outputs. In the afternoon you will use your photographs to learn Photoshop’s windows, tool palette options and menus; how to import images from your digital camera; fix mistakes, retouch, composite images; file formats; and more. This class is suitable for professional craftspeople as well as those just wanting learn about their camera and Photoshop. You will need to bring a digital camera and a computer with Photoshop (not Elements) installed on it.

For centuries, weaving has enabled storytellers and historians to communicate and capture a sense of place and people. In this two-part workshop, you will create your own simple tapestry using pictorial techniques. You will use yarns to weave limitless colors and textures into shapes. On a frame (lap) loom, you will learn free-form designs, curves and blocks, or to work from a drawn "cartoon" design.  Short pieces of yarns will be used to blend shades, add texture, and color, as you design your art work.  Learn warping, and finishing techniques on your picture frame or canvas stretcher loom. Whether you want a mountain landscape or a bouquet of flowers, you'll learn to design and weave lovely small tapestries, ready to have a place of honor in your home. No experience needed. Indigo is one of the oldest dyes, and has appeared in cultures all over the world for thousands of years. Shaped resist dyeing, also known as shibori, is an ancient way of patterning cloth by means of intentional bundling before the cloth is dyed. This two-day class will focus on making and maintaining an indigo vat, which we'll use to dye several types of shaped-resist dyed fabric. We'll concentrate on pole wrapped shibori (arashi), a Japanese technique that produces exquisitely striped patterns.

In this one-day workshop you can choose to make a laundry basket, a kindling basket, or a pack (Adirondack style) basket. The baskets will be woven using reed with a hardwood base, rails, and rim. Full descriptions are available on request. Materials included.

As one of the oldest textiles known to humankind, naturally water-repellent and extremely warm, felt is the ideal material for a stylish winter hat. On the first Saturday you will discuss process and techniques and begin to knit the pillbox-style hat. Over the next two weeks you will finish knitting the hat and on the second Saturday you will learn the nuances of felting in a washing machine. Some knitting experience required. This two-day workshop will be held at the artist’s house in Canaan, NH. Directions and materials list provided on registration.

Working with expert assistance, a heavy-duty sewing machine, and your own piece of moderate-sized furniture you will learn basic upholstery skills and become familiar with fabrics, materials, cushions, and construction methods. The first Wednesday is a two-hour class discussing projects, fabric choices, and suppliers.

This class serves as an introduction to, or a further exploration of, modern mosaics using the Byzantine and picassette (broken/stolen plate) styles. Topics to be covered include Byzantine, picassette, and paper mosaic techniques; types of tesserae (found and purchased); design: the flow of mosaics (andamento) and the different ways to lay tesserae; adhesives/substrates (what to use and when); and grout: types, coloring, and application. We will look at examples of all three types of mosaics and the artists who are creating them. You will make at least one project. Possible projects include a garden pot, mirror, frame, mural, bowl, a small wooden box, or small piece of furniture. You may use paper tesserae for your project instead of, or as well as, ceramic and glass tesserae.

Glass Engraving

Engrave your own design on the glassware of your choice for a unique gift. Examples of glassware might include (but are not limited to) a pair of champagne flutes, a vase, spice bottles, a perfume bottle, and beer mugs. Day one will focus on practicing how to engrave letters and/or images on an inexpensive glass vessel using the flex shaft. The instructor will provide both the glass engraving tools and the practice glassware. Photographs of glass made by regional glassblowers will be shown as examples of types of glassware to bring to day two. On day two you will bring your own selection of glassware and with Deb's assistance engrave unique designs on them using the tools and experience acquired in day one. Materials fee includes the engraving tools and the practice glass, but not the glass to be used on the second day.

Learn to make your own decorated lampshade. You will use paper and acrylic paints to create a unique shade. The finished shade will measure 8”x10” (10”x14”). You can bring a shade to recycle. Materials are included in the tuition price

Spend a day creating unique decorative paste papers that can be used for covering handmade books, boxes and so on. To make the paper you will apply one, two or even three layers of color to paper and using various techniques, add and/or subtract the color to make stripes, stamping, combing, etc. You will leave with several sheets of startlingly beautiful papers. This workshop will be held at the instructor’s studio.

Learn to make a unique decorative box using acid free bookboard and paste paper. You will cover learn the basic construction of the box itself to all the insider’s tricks for covering with paste paper. Bring any decorative papers you have as well as buttons and beads for embellishments. This workshop will be held at the instructor’s studio. Materials list and directions will be mailed at time of registration.

Using traditional wood carving chi8sels and mallets beginner students will carve inset letters on a simple plaque that can be used for a house sign, mailbox or E-911 number. Those who have some experience with wood carving can work on a project of their choice.

Make one or more simple projects such as a mirror sconce or small bookshelf while learning to safely use a wood lathe, radial arm saw, plainer, joiner, drill press, band saw and router. The central focus of the class is the safe use of these woodworking machines. You may be required to take your project home with you at the end of each class.
