Chair Caning

Learn to cane a chair seat. You can either bring your own chair (in a good state of repair, i.e. the wood does not need gluing, and can take a seat), or Grant will provide a small kit on which you can learn. As supplies need to be ordered, you need to sign up at least two weeks in advance. For a fee, Grant can repair furniture if delivered to him one month prior to class. Anticipate at least two hours of homework. |

Knitted Gifts

Nothing beats the special love of a handmade knitted gift. Learn to make a knitted gift of your choosing — hat, mittens, child's sweater, socks, tea cozy, etc. We will explore yarn alternatives, print and Internet pattern resources, and how to select a project that you can finish. You will receive help on all stages of your project from getting started, to understanding the stitches, reading charts and patterns, and fixing mistakes. You will have class time to complete your gift. You will learn finishing techniques and the difference between handmade and homemade. |
Reinventing the Mark

Using found and purchased materials, acrylic inks, paints on paper and fabric you will summon your wildly creative inner child. Working alone and in groups, rediscover and invent new ways of making marks. Bring your old (still working) wind up toys, building blocks, toys with wheels, swimming noodles and more. On the second day, we will cut, tear and reassemble pieces into several small compositions and include some hand or machine stitching. Working at a fast pace, you’ll dismiss the inner critic and rediscover the satisfaction of breaking the rules and following where the path leads. Bring a selection of mark making items to share during the workshop—marbles, old balls, plastic lids, old shoes with tread patterns on the soles, feathers and much more! Don't buy new things, this is the perfect opportunity for creative recycling or repurposing. |

Beaded Rope Necklaces

Learn to make fabulous "rope" bracelets, necklaces, and chokers for yourself or friends. Using small glass seed beads and a tiny crochet hook you’ll learn the technique to arrange the beads in a spiral. Once you’ve mastered the technique you can make endless geometric patterns, longer necklaces, chokers and bracelets. No crochet experience necessary. This is very fine work, so please bring your own magnifying spectacles even if you do not wear glasses. Instructor will supply all other materials. |

Working with expert assistance, a heavy-duty sewing machine, and your own piece of moderate-sized furniture you will learn basic upholstery skills and become familiar with fabrics, materials, cushions, and construction methods. In the first two-hour class you will discuss projects, fabric choices, and suppliers. You will bring your piece of furniture and supplies to the second class and begin working on turning the existing ratty furniture into a gorgeous upholstered piece. You will be proud to say, "I did it myself!" |

Creative Sewing: Repurposing Clothes

Reinvent, re-imagine, repurpose! Put the odds and ends you’ve collected over the years to good use. Photoshop As A Design Tool For Fiber Or Other Medium

Photoshop is a wonderful tool for fabric design—woven or printed—and it is also useful for any other medium that uses imagery and patterns. This class will teach you ways to manipulate imagery, make repeats, and turn your designs into loom-ready files to be woven or printed at a mill. Beginners to advanced users of Photoshop can take this workshop. Photoshop instruction will be geared to a material output, rather than to photography. Materials fee includes 1 yard of warp tapestry jacquard or 15 swatches of printed fabric designs. You will need to bring a computer with Photoshop CS or Photoshop Elements installed. |
2-D Felted Imagery—Wet Felting

Felting, an ancient craft, transforms combed wool fleece into a sturdy 2- or 3-dimensional fabric by using warm soapy water and elbow grease. Felted products are quite beautiful and unique when the colors and textures of wool and other fibers, such as rayon, silk, angora, and more are combined. In this class you will have a chance to create felt slippers in a variety of styles or a 2-D image, using many colors of dyed and undyed wool and other fibers. |

Fun With Wire

Wire is a fascinating, flexible medium that you can do so much with. You’ll coil, wrap, tinker, weave, twine, braid, crotchet, knit, twist and much more to make all kinds of fabulous things. Wire is not just confined to jewelry, but can be used to make vessels, baskets, lampshades, sculpture and much more. Best of all, it's low-tech and does not require a lot of fancy tools to work with. We will be using colored copper wire, brass, bronze, nickel and silver wire. All experience levels welcome. |

Knitted Lace

Knitted lace is beautiful as hats, scarves, shawls, and sweaters. Learn how to knit lace and create the garment of your choice. Using a wide range of knitted samples, print and Internet resources you will be able to select a project to make. This class is designed to take the fear out of lace. Project options include heavier yarns and medium needle sizes or you can work with thinner yarns and needles. Learn how to read lace charts and many tips for successful lace knitting. There is plenty of class time for working on your project and becoming comfortable with your pattern. Finishing and wet blocking of your completed project will be covered. |

Working Outside The Box: Covered Containers In Unusual Shapes

Polymer clay enables us to make containers in any shape we wish so why are there so many boxes that are round or rectangular? Altered Mail Art
