Home Grown & Gathered: Natural Dyes

  • CraftStudies Studio & School 87 Maple Street Hartford, VT, 05001 United States (map)

Saturday, August 9, 2025 | 1 - 4P | One-day workshop | $100

Natural dyeing is an ancient practice of infusing textiles with plant-based pigment, with interesting historical methods found in all parts of the world. Our local ecosystem includes a number of dye plants, some cultivated in and some growing wild, including a few invasive species. In this class we'll dye wool yarn and cotton fabric with plants found in local gardens, weedy patches, forests, and fields, and discuss effective techniques for working with them to give beautiful color to your textile projects. We'll also talk about how to identify wild plants, the ethics of harvesting from the wild, suggestions for growing your own dye plants, and the cultural and historical significance of some of the plants we'll be working with.

If you would like to bring some personal fiber or fabric to dye, please get in touch with Emma ahead of time (emmapercy@proton.me) to ensure it is prepared correctly ahead of time for dyeing!

Supplies: $30 supply fee payable to Teaching Artist on the day of the workshop.

Teaching Artist: Emma Percy

This class focuses on plants available in late summer. For dying with early to mid-summer plants, check out the July offering of Home Grown & Gathered: Natural Dyes.
