Natural dyeing is an ancient practice of infusing textiles with plant-based pigment, with interesting historical methods found in all parts of the world. Our local ecosystem includes a number of dye plants, some cultivated in and some growing wild, including a few invasive species. In this class we'll dye wool yarn and cotton fabric with plants found in local gardens, weedy patches, forests, and fields, and discuss effective techniques for working with them to give beautiful color to your textile projects. We'll also talk about how to identify wild plants, the ethics of harvesting from the wild, suggestions for growing your own dye plants, and the cultural and historical significance of some of the plants we'll be working with.
