Explore the world of glazes through discussion and hands-on learning! Discover the science behind glaze materials and how glaze formulas are formed through a comparative exploration of two different glaze categories or "families" that showcase interestingly comparable properties of glazes.

After a short introduction to the scientific foundation of glazes, including water chemistry,  the periodic table, and the unique properties of each glaze category, students will each choose a different glaze recipe within each overall category to mix and test.  Once test pieces are fired, we will discuss the glaze outcomes, and compare the content of the different recipes  to understand the differences in outcomes. This round of the Study Group will focus on Floating Blues and Kaki glaze families. 

Clay work in this class will be limited to small pieces on which to test glazes. Registered students will be sent a list of recommended safety equipment. Once glazes formulated in class are tested as stable, students are welcome to use them to glaze larger pieces. 

Students must have previously taken at least three 4-6 week clay classes with CraftStudies before registering for this class.

Supplies: Instructional materials are included with registration. Additional clay is not included and must be purchased through the Supply Shop.

Open Studio: Open Studio is included with registration for the 3-month duration of your class.
