Paper-making with Plants
Sunday, June 2, 2024 | 1 - 4P | One-day workshop | $100
Learn how to make beautiful handmade paper out of recycled scrap paper, plant fibers, and flowers! We will go through the hand papermaking process step-by-step: understanding different types of fiber, how to source and process fibers, making pulp, forming sheets, adding decorative inclusions, and pressing and drying the sheets. Everyone will make several pieces of paper to use for their own art and craft projects, for writing letters, or simply to appreciate as art in its own right.
Please wear clothing and shoes that you don’t mind getting wet!

Letterpress Posters

Learn the magic of combining type, paper, and ink at this all-day letterpress workshop. You’ll learn the basics of the history of printing, how to set type, and how to print your design on a press that has been in use since 1913 as you create a letterpress poster in up to two colors using antique wood and metal type, ornaments, and hand-carved illustrations.

Block Print: Vegetables

Just as our gardens are kicking into high gear, let’s get inspired by all the produce bursting out around us. Vegetables make a great study for making stamps and they’re practical too–perhaps you’d like to use yours for recipe cards, kitchen towels, t-shirts, or greeting cards. This class will cover all the basic elements of stamp-making: design, carving, stamping. You’ll leave with several prints and a carved stamp to take home and use for more.

Calligraphy
Sunday, May 5, 2024 | 1 - 3P | One-day workshop | $150
This introductory calligraphy workshop will help you get started with the basics of modern calligraphy. Learn the fundamental details of this art form. Learn how to hold a pen for optimal results, the basic calligraphy strokes and how to form letters and words. No experience necessary!
Each student will receive a pen holder, a beginner-friendly nib, ink, and practice worksheets to keep.
Complete a small project to take home, as well as have the option to join a private Facebook group to continue the fun.

Letterpress Cards (IN PROGRESS)

At Scale House Print Shop | Using antique wood and metal type, ornaments, and illustrations, you’ll design a single-color card and print it on a printing press that started its working life in 1892. At the end of the day, you’ll take home 25 handmade cards (plus envelopes).

We’ll spend the first session sketching and carving, the second class carving and printing, and in the third class we’ll add color with watercolors. You will come away with a completed print suitable for framing, embellishing and/or sending as a card. This class is perfect for both beginners and seasoned craftspeople.

Deckle Box Paper-making

Learn a variety of decorative hand paper-making techniques using a deckle box. This simple tool can be made at home and allows you to make beautiful sheets of paper in a small space with minimal mess. We will explore multicolored pulp painting, botanical inclusions, textural effects, and other techniques using a combination of plant fibers and recycled paper fibers. Everyone will create a unique assortment of handmade papers.
