In this potentially vigorous outdoor workshop, participants craft their own three-legged chopping block, and wooden mallet, from raw materials. Participants practice hatchet skills in shaping legs and a handy wooden mallet. Participants can try a hand-powered auger to drill the holes for the legs (a power auger is also on hand). Both the block and mallet are essential tools for wooden spoon makers. All tools and materials are provided.

In Part 1, learn to make two custom silver rings together. No prior metals or soldering experience is necessary. Leave with a sterling silver ring, and the unique experience of transforming a raw material into something wearable, precious, and loaded with love.
$300 registration fee is for two students.
Supply Costs: Material fees are based on each ring's unique design. Materials can be purchased in the studio supply shop. Expected materials fee of $15-$30 per ring.

In this class students with wheel throwing experience will explore making various sizes and styles of lidded containers in a relaxed and fun studio setting. Design considerations for each type of vessel will be discussed and demonstrations will be given. Individual instruction will be given to help students develop greater proficiency on the wheel. We will be taking the clay from its raw state through glazed finished ware.
Prerequisite: Students should be able to center and make a 4” cylinder.

Intro to Mosaics

This weekend class is geared toward beginners who want to learn about basic techniques, tools and materials involved in creating mosaic art. Participants will learn how to cut & use various kinds of tesserae, use of proper adhesives, design/layout and grouting. Students will be introduced to a wide variety of materials and will complete a small intro tile in addition to a 2-D project of their own design during the class. Students will be encouraged to experiment with color and texture to begin to discover the possibilities of mosaic. All materials, supplies and use of tools are provided. Come experience the endless possibilities of this beautiful art form!
Students are encouraged to bring tiles, glass, beads, broken china, or any other interesting objects they may wish to add to a mosaic.
Students should wear old clothing and bring: apron, cotton rags for cleaning, & sturdy kitchen gloves for mixing & spreading grout.

Intro to Mosaics

This weekend class is geared toward beginners who want to learn about basic techniques, tools and materials involved in creating mosaic art. Participants will learn how to cut & use various kinds of tesserae, use of proper adhesives, design/layout and grouting. Students will be introduced to a wide variety of materials and will complete a small intro tile in addition to a 2-D project of their own design during the class. Students will be encouraged to experiment with color and texture to begin to discover the possibilities of mosaic. All materials, supplies and use of tools are provided. Come experience the endless possibilities of this beautiful art form!
Students are encouraged to bring tiles, glass, beads, broken china, or any other interesting objects they may wish to add to a mosaic.
Students should wear old clothing and bring: apron, cotton rags for cleaning, & sturdy kitchen gloves for mixing & spreading grout.

Kids and care-givers try your hands at the potter's wheel--together! Share the experience of learning the basics of wheel throwing, including centering, shaping, trimming and glazing. This three-part workshop is designed for kids between ages 6-12 and one caring adult.

Learn how to make beautiful handmade paper out of recycled scrap paper, plant fibers, and flowers! We will go through the hand papermaking process step-by-step: understanding different types of fiber, how to source and process fibers, making pulp, forming sheets, adding decorative inclusions, and pressing and drying the sheets. Everyone will make several pieces of paper to use for their own art and craft projects, for writing letters, or simply to appreciate as art in its own right.

Explore block printing on fabric! You’ll learn the process of designing a repeat pattern suited for textiles. We will use an easy cut block which allows for the quick creation of block for experimenting with placement, including repeating and abstract patterns, as we learn techniques for applying the fabric ink on the fabric. Intro to Wheel Throwing

Learn the basics of pottery on the wheel or refine your practice centering, shaping, and trimming pots. Learn to make functional forms, attach handles, and explore surface decoration with the help of an expert potter and teaching artist.
Open Studio is included with your registration for the duration of your class.
Clay is not included with class tuition and must be purchased through the CraftStudies Supply Shop through registration.

Modern Quilt Sampler: Flying Geese

Create a quilt from start to finish through an exploration of a timeless and endlessly variable quilt block motif–with a modern twist--Flying Geese! Through this six-week class, you will learn accurate cutting and piecing, explore color, pattern, fabric selection and composition, and integrate sashing and borders as you create a quilt top using the flying geese motif in a number of different ways. Give your quilt the finishing touch as you learn to layer, baste, quilt, and bind your modern creation.

Clay is more fun in pairs! Learn how to throw a basic pot on the wheel. No experience needed, just a willingness to have some fun and to get a little dirty! Registration includes clay, use of tools, glaze, and firing for 2 people. Your work will be glazed in your color of choice, fired, and ready for pick up within a few weeks. Includes 20% off at Putnam's Vine/Yard for the night!

Intro to Spoon-making
Saturday, June 22, 2024 | 9A - 4P | One-day workshop | $150
Working with freshly harvested green wood, participants learn the foundational grips and techniques of spoon carving with a straight knife and a bent/hook knife. With an emphasis on safety and steady progress, participants learn how wood type and grain influence carving while crafting a personal kitchen spoon. Instruction on drying, decoration, and finishing is offered at the end of the session. All tools and materials are provided.

Letterpress Posters

Learn the magic of combining type, paper, and ink at this all-day letterpress workshop. You’ll learn the basics of the history of printing, how to set type, and how to print your design on a press that has been in use since 1913 as you create a letterpress poster in up to two colors using antique wood and metal type, ornaments, and hand-carved illustrations.

Learn one of the oldest crafts in human history by making your own pack-basket. Create a beautiful, durable, and useful basket crafted from local and responsibly harvested, hand-pounded black ash logs. Craft a daypack sized traditional Adirondack style pack-basket with cedar runners and base and adjustable webbing straps. Discussion and demonstration on how the material is harvested and processed. Additional $80 materials fee payable to instructor.
