This introductory calligraphy workshop will help you get started with the basics of modern calligraphy and brush lettering! Learn the fundamental details of this art form. Learn how to hold a pen/pencil for optimal results, the basic calligraphy strokes and how to form letters and words. No experience necessary!

Each brush calligraphy student will receive a pencil, two brush pens, and practice worksheets to keep.

Complete a small project to take home, as well as have the option to join a private Facebook group to continue the fun.

Introduction to Jewelry Making: Forming

Introduction to Jewelry Making Series: Materials, Tools & Techniques

Teaching Artist: Melanie Considine

This four-week series is designed for students with little or no experience. Students will learn about the workspace, materials and tools used in making metal jewelry, and will develop basic skills essential to the craft of jewelry making. Each session will introduce new tools and skills, and each successive session will incorporate tools and skills learned in the prior sessions.

Materials and projects will be provided so that students can expect to leave with a finished piece each week.

Forming

Students will work with hammers, forming mandrels and stakes to bend and shape metal. We will introduce the rolling mill as an option for texturing metal. We will cover the concepts of work hardening and annealing metal. Students will be provided with several design options as a starting point to create a copper or brass cuff.

Introduction to Jewelry Making: Introduction to Soldering

Introduction to Jewelry Making Series: Materials, Tools & Techniques

Students will learn about the workspace, materials and tools used in making metal jewelry, and will develop basic skills essential to the craft of jewelry making. Introduction to Soldering

We will cover the principles and techniques of soldering with an overview of the workspace and safety, and students will practice joining various size pieces of copper before progressing to silver. Students will also learn the basics of making rings, measuring finger size and calculating lengths of metal for proper ring fit. Forming and texturing techniques learned in earlier classes will be applied to making a textured silver ring.

Design and construct your own pair of leather boots! Worn by men and women, this simple but classic leather boot is ankle-high with a toe cap, heel foxing and laces. Choose from an array of leather colors to craft a unique pair of boots all your own. Starting with basic pattern making and how to properly lay the leather, learn basic shoe-making techniques to create a fully leather-lined boot upper, which is then attached to your custom-sized leather sole. All levels welcome; some hand/finger strength and dexterity are needed for sewing.

$450 registration fee + $250 materials fee payable to instructor; includes all materials needed to create your personalized boots!

Introduction to Jewelry Making: Cold Connections

Introduction to Jewelry Making Series: Materials, Tools & Techniques

This four-week series is designed for students with little or no experience. Students will learn about the workspace, materials and tools used in making metal jewelry, and will develop basic skills essential to the craft of jewelry making. Cold Connections

Building on skills learned in week 1, students will learn to combine components using cold connections. Students will make rivets from tube and wire and will learn how to create both functional and decorative rivets. We will introduce the flex shaft motor for drilling holes, and the jeweler’s torch as a heating tool will also be introduced. Students will create a completed piece which incorporates moving parts, either a pendant or earrings.

Students will learn about the workspace, materials and tools used in making metal jewelry, and will develop basic skills essential to the craft of jewelry making. Each session will introduce new tools and skills, and each successive session will incorporate tools and skills learned in the prior sessions.

Materials and projects will be provided so that students can expect to leave with a finished piece each week.

The Basics

Students will be introduced to the studio workspace and several of the fundamental jewelry making materials, tools and techniques including planning work flow, measuring and cutting sheet metal using the jeweler’s saw, texturing metal with hammers, finishing with files, sanding and other finishing tools. We will work on creating a pair of textured domed copper or brass earrings or a domed pendant.

If you've never used a sewing machine or you’d simply like a refresher, this series of workshops is for you! Each of these short accessible workshops will build your sewing confidence!

Learn how to integrate a conventional zipper and an invisible zipper by making two zipper pouches. Begin with a simple flat rectangular pouch, then move onto a slightly more advanced box bottom pouch. Learn simple techniques that will enable you to make more pouches in any size you desire!

In late summer, the Upper Valley is in full bloom with a bright array of dye plants at our fingertips. This two-part workshop will guide you through an exploration of color from garden plants and flowers commonly found around our area, as we process plants, prepare our fiber, and of course, dye! We will use mordants, plant and animal fibers (cotton, wool, and silk) to create an array of colors, patterns, and a dye journal that can be used for future fiber projects!

Learn the magic of combining type, paper, and ink at this all-day letterpress workshop. You’ll learn the basics of the history of printing, how to set type, and how to print your design on a press that has been in use since 1913 as you create a letterpress poster in up to two colors using antique wood and metal type, ornaments, and hand-carved illustrations. The 20 posters you’ll take home will show the signature letterpress impression that only type can make and will make great gifts for friends and family. Students should come with an idea of a short phrase (no more than 15 words) that they’d like to use in their poster design, and wear clothes that they don’t mind getting a little inky.

Discover Shibori, the ancient art of dying cloth with a blue dye from the Indigo plant used in Japan, Africa,Peru, and India! We will learn folding, binding & wrapping techniques and use stencils to imprint patterns onto our fabrics. We then dip them numerous times in & out of the dyebath to build up a lighter or darker shade of blue. Students can make up to 15 pieces.  All dye kits & work stations will be provided. 

Recommended materials students should bring: Dishwashing gloves, a waterproof apron to protect your clothes, a large trash bag to bring your wet pieces home, and 10-15 fabrics- laundered, used or new, white or pastel colors in natural fabrics such as cotton, silk, wool, bamboo, linen, and rayon

In this potentially vigorous outdoor workshop, participants will spend the better part of the day crafting their own three-legged chopping block, and wooden mallet, from raw materials. Participants will practice hatchet skills in shaping legs for their chopping blocks and a handy wooden mallet to use. Participants will have the opportunity to try a hand-powered auger to drill the holes for the legs, but we will also have a power auger on hand. Both of these objects are fairly essential parts of the kit for wooden spoon makers. If time and energy remain at the end, there will be materials available to use for making spoon blanks. All tools and materials are provided.

Starting off with a simple Bundle Broom, the students will master the use of the tumble spool and the story stick, creating a small but serviceable whisk broom. Introduction To Bezel Set Cabochon: As an introduction to stone setting, students will work with round cabochon stones. Calculating, measuring and cutting skills will be combined with basic soldering skills to create a bezel setting. Students will learn the planning process for creating the finished piece incorporating the bezel set cabochon. Students will be provided with various design options as a starting point to create a ring, earrings or a pendant incorporating their bezel set cabochon.

Stone Setting And Finishing: Students will continue work on their bezel set piece. They will use stone setting tools to set the cabochon, and they will use the flex shaft with various abrasives to clean up and finish their pieces.

In this three-part workshop, students will be introduced to various methods of decorating the surface of green ware. Methods explored will include sgraffito with underglaze and/or slip, silk screen printing, monoprinting and underglaze transfers. Students are encouraged to bring their own green ware–soft leather hard to leather hard is perfect! However, we will have slabs available to use, and pots can be made during class for decoration in later sessions. Students are encouraged to come with ideas as well as a willingness to experiment!

If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to make your own decorative boxes, then this class is a great place to start! This decorative lidded box is the perfect size to hold your pens and pencils - or perhaps future boxmaking tools?

 During this workshop, you’ll make a box that measures 8” (l) x 3” (w) x 2.25” (h). You’ll learn basic boxmaking techniques, including how to measure and cut materials, wrapping a box with paper, and the best way to apply adhesives. We’ll also talk about how to scale the size of the box to fit differently-sized items.

 Not only will this class offer you the foundation and confidence needed to continue making boxes, but it will also provide you with a variety of bookbinding skills. You will receive a detailed handout and resource list for all materials we use.

Bookbinding: Herbarium Journal

Teaching Artist: Emma Percy

In this workshop you will create your own handmade herbarium book in which to preserve plant specimens, make botanical illustrations, and record your observations of nature.

Collecting botanical specimens in books was a popular 18th and 19th century pastime, and making a personal herbarium is a valuable and enjoyable way to learn about the plants in your local environment and create a beautiful, unique collection for reference.

We will be using the Secret Belgian stitch, a non-adhesive bookbinding style that includes a spine and hard cover, and allows the book to lie open flat. In addition to constructing and binding the book, we will discuss methods for pressing and preserving plants before they are stored, ethics around harvesting from the wild, and tools for botanical identification.

Spoon Making

One Day Workshop

Guest Artist: Andre Souligny

Spoon carving is a delightful pastime, accessible to all. Working with freshly harvested green wood, participants will begin with a well-prepared kitchen spoon blank to learn the foundational grips and techniques of spoon carving with a straight knife and a bent/hook knife. There will be equal measures of instruction, demonstration, and hands-on practice. With an emphasis on safety and steady progress, participants will learn how wood type and grain influence carving while crafting a personal kitchen spoon. Instruction on drying, embellishments/decoration, and finishing will be offered at the end of the session. All tools and materials will be provided.

Paper Making - Stationary Sets

Teaching Artist: Emma Percy

Learn how to make beautiful handmade notecards and envelopes out of plant fibers and flowers! We will go through the hand papermaking process step-by-step and discuss processing plant fibers, making pulp, forming sheets, adding decorative inclusions, and pressing and drying the sheets. Everyone will make a unique set of stationery to take home and use in their own correspondence and gifting (hint: they make perfect cards for Mother's Day!) Please wear clothing and shoes that you don’t mind getting wet.
