Community Natural Dye Bath

Saturday, July 11 - Sunday, July 12, 2026 | 1 - 2:30P | 2 sessions | $65

Bring your own natural-fiber yarn, fabric, or clothing to dye with plants! No previous experience required, though past students and seasoned natural dyers are welcome. Everyone can bring up to 300g of material to dye.

The first session will cover mordanting, a crucial step which enables plant pigment to bond to the fiber, and we'll walk through the processes of mordanting both cellulose (plant) and protein (animal) fibers. The second session will offer 2 different colored natural dye baths to choose from, yellow or red, each made from traditional dye plants to give your garments, fabric, or fiber a fresh vibrant color!

IMPORTANT: Natural dyes only work on natural fiber materials (cotton, linen, help wool, silk, etc. - no polyester or other synthetics). Make sure your fiber/fabric/clothing is thoroughly scoured or washed before the first class. Clothing that has been worn before can simply be washed and dried as usual, preferably without any fabric softener or dryer sheets. Wool yarn that hasn't been washed before, or fabric fresh off the roll, should be scoured according to these instructions. Contact Emma at emmapercy@proton.me with any questions or if you need detergent or soda ash for scouring.

Supplies: $30 materials fee payable to the Teaching Artist on the day of the workshop.

Botanical Gelli Print-making

Saturday, June 6, 2026 | 10A - 1P | One-day workshop | $150

Explore the beauty of plants through the spontaneous and expressive process of gelli plate printmaking. Use leaves, flowers, grasses, and other botanical materials to create layered monoprints that capture the textures, silhouettes, and rhythms of the natural world.

Gelli printing is a playful and accessible form of printmaking that requires no press. Participants will learn how to build rich compositions through layering, masking, and pulling multiple prints using acrylic inks and paints. As we work, we’ll explore how different plant structures—veins, stems, seed heads, and petals—translate into striking graphic impressions.

The day will include demonstrations, guided experimentation, and plenty of time to create a collection of unique botanical prints. These prints can stand alone as artworks or be used later for collage, cards, journals, and mixed-media projects.

All experience levels are welcome. Participants are encouraged to bring interesting leaves or plant materials from their gardens or walks.

Supplies: All materials are included with registration.

Mixed Media Bookbinding (SOLD OUT)

Sunday, November 2, 2025 | 10A - 2P | One-day workshop | $100

Make a one-of-a-kind journal or sketchbook using an eclectic variety of papers, maps, found images, fabrics, and reclaimed book covers! The books we make in this class will be unique works of art in their own right as well as spaces to draw, write, paint, and imagine. Inspired by the ancient Coptic bookbinding method, the single-needle link stitch we'll practice is elegant and deceptively simple - the flexible binding allows the book to open flat, and the exposed looping stitches create a beautiful braid-like effect. No prior bookbinding experience is required, though a basic understanding of hand-sewing would be helpful. If you would like to include any special paper, images, or other materials in your book, please bring them to class with you!

Supplies: $25 supply fee payable to Teaching Artist on the day of the workshop.

Letterpress Holiday Cards (SOLD OUT)

Saturday, November 1, 2025 | 10A - 2:30P | One-day workshop | $175

Nothing says “happy holidays” like a handmade card, and nothing says handmade better than letterpress! Using antique wood and metal type, ornaments, and illustrations, you’ll design a single-color card and print it on a printing press that started its working life in 1892.

At the end of the day, you’ll take home 20 handmade cards (plus envelopes) in plenty of time to get them sent to friends and family before the holiday season gets too busy.

Class takers should come with an idea of a short phrase (no more than 10 words) that they’d like to use in their card design, and wear clothes that they don’t mind getting a little inky.

Supplies: All materials are included with registration.
