Sketch Book Club is a casual weekly gathering focused on building a joyful journaling habit to support your craft practice. This is not about finished work or technical skill—it’s about showing up, experimenting, and letting the process surprise you. Each week we’ll work with a variety of materials and prompts. Prompts are designed to be unexpected, sometimes funny, sometimes reflective, and always open-ended. Over the course of the class, your sketchbook will become a place to notice, wonder, and explore without pressure. All skill levels are welcome.

The Secret Belgian stitch is an elegant hardcover bookbinding style that allows the book to lie open flat - perfect for sketchbooks and journals! Books made in this style are durable and beautiful, and the sewing method is approachable for beginners and experienced bookmakers alike. Once the book is completed it’s hard to see how it was made, which is why it is “secret!”

Let’s make Valentines! Learn basic design, carving, and printing techniques, and also experiment with adding color and other embellishments after the blocks have been printed. Every crafter needs a good journal. Learn how to make a Coptic-style hand-sewn sketchbook or journal! Coptic binding is one of the oldest bookbinding methods in history, and deceptively simple - the flexible binding allows the book to open flat, and the exposed looping stitches create a beautiful braid-like effect. No prior bookbinding experience is required, and all materials will be provided!

Utilizing techniques common to the Scandinavian and Russian style of basketry, you will craft birds and stars from strips of inner bark from the paper birch. Make a one-of-a-kind journal or sketchbook using an eclectic variety of papers, maps, found images, fabrics, and reclaimed book covers! The books we make in this class will be unique works of art in their own right as well as spaces to draw, write, paint, and imagine. Inspired by the ancient Coptic bookbinding method, the single-needle link stitch we'll practice is elegant and deceptively simple - the flexible binding allows the book to open flat, and the exposed looping stitches create a beautiful braid-like effect. No prior bookbinding experience is required, though a basic understanding of hand-sewing would be helpful. If you would like to include any special paper, images, or other materials in your book, please bring them to class with you!

Nothing says “happy holidays” like a handmade card, and nothing says handmade better than letterpress! Using antique wood and metal type, ornaments, and illustrations, you’ll design a single-color card and print it on a printing press that started its working life in 1892.

At the end of the day, you’ll take home 20 handmade cards (plus envelopes) in plenty of time to get them sent to friends and family before the holiday season gets too busy.

Class takers should come with an idea of a short phrase (no more than 10 words) that they’d like to use in their card design, and wear clothes that they don’t mind getting a little inky.

Just as our gardens are kicking into high gear, let’s get inspired by all the produce bursting out around us. Vegetables make a great study for making stamps and they’re practical too–perhaps you’d like to use yours for recipe cards, kitchen towels, t-shirts, or greeting cards. This class will cover all the basic elements of stamp-making: design, carving, stamping. You’ll leave with several prints and a carved stamp to take home and use for more.

Join Sharon for an all-levels yoga class that will focus on simple exercises—many of which can be done from a chair—which focuses on countering the effects of crafting on the hands, arms, shoulders and hips. We’ll explore how movement might help us focus, create, and bravely send our ideas into the world! 

No previous yoga experience is needed. Much of our practice will be done seated in chairs or stools. Modifications will be taught for those who wish to work from the floor or yoga mat.

Learn the magic of combining type, paper, and ink at this Saturday letterpress workshop. You’ll learn the basics of the history of printing, how to set type, and how to print your design on a press that has been in use since 1911 as you create a letterpress print in up to two colors using antique wood and metal type, ornaments, and hand-carved illustrations.

The 20 prints you’ll take home will show the signature letterpress impression that only type can make! Class takers should come with a quote, lyric, or other phrase they want to print in mind, and wear clothes that they don’t mind getting a little inky.

Learn how to make beautiful handmade paper out of plant fibers, recycled scrap paper, and flowers! We will go through the traditional western-style hand papermaking process step-by-step: understanding different types of fiber, how to source and process fibers, making pulp, forming sheets, adding decorative inclusions, and pressing and drying the sheets. Everyone will make several pieces of paper to use for their own art and craft projects, for writing letters, or simply to appreciate as art in its own right. You'll also learn strategies for making paper at home in a relatively small space without the need for much specialized equipment. Please wear clothing and shoes that you don’t mind getting wet!
